Map Creation using Photoshop – Part 1

I’ve been spending quite a bit of time over at CartographersGuild.com learning various techniques for creating good looking fantasy maps. I used Photoshop CS4 to make these maps, but I think the technique will work with earlier version of Photoshop as well.
Cartography
CartographersGuild.com is an amazing site with many well crafted tutorials and a vibrant community of mapping enthusiasts. There is a great deal of knowledge that can go in to making more realistic maps (like plate tectonics and wind currents). None of which is covered in this tutorial. If that depth of realism interests you, I highly suggest you wander over to their site and get involved in more serious map making. If you just want to create a decent looking map in under an hour, continue to the next page and follow the steps.
